St Mellitus College is delighted to announce that Revd Dr Hannah Steele has been appointed as the Director of St Mellitus College, London (Monday).

St Mellitus College was founded in 2007 by the Bishops of London and Chelmsford in partnership with HTB. From September 2019, the College will have five centres across the UK – London, Chelmsford, the North West, the South West, and the East Midlands – providing vibrant, innovative, and rigorous theological education. The SMC London (Monday) teaching centre offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate Theology and Youth Ministry programmes as well as the full-time context-based ordination training pioneered by SMC. It also offer SMC’s pilot ‘Peter Stream’ which aims to support candidates from under-represented backgrounds during the discernment process.  Since its inception it has experienced significant growth, and now has around 300 students engaging in its various courses at our teaching centre based at St Judes’ Church, Earl’s Court.

Hannah has been a member of the St Mellitus staff team, based at the London teaching centre, since 2015 as Tutor and Lecturer in Missiology and in addition, more recently, overseeing training for pioneer ordinands. Hannah studied a BA in Theology and Philosophy at Oxford University and gained an MA in Theological Education at Kings College London. Her PhD research at Kings was supervised by Alister McGrath. In 2017 Hannah published her first book New World, New Church?: Theology and the Emerging Church (SCM Press). Alongside her academic work, Hannah has spent time engaged in mission and evangelism amongst students in central London as a staff worker with the University and Colleges Christian Fellowship. She has also been on the leadership team of her local church as an outreach worker.  Hannah was ordained at St Paul’s Cathedral this summer. Hannah is married and lives in Peckham with her husband and three sons. She loves watching football, baking and traveling, especially to Uganda where she and her family have spent some time in recent years.

Hannah writes:

I am very grateful for the trust which Andy and the College are showing in me and am humbled by this appointment. I am deeply committed to St Mellitus and delighted to be part of the next season in its exciting journey. It has been a great joy to be part of the college staff team for the last 4 years and to see the college continue to flourish by God’s grace. I am inspired by the creative, innovative and missional spirit which underpins the work of the college and I love the breadth of students that the college attracts, both lay and ordained, and the way it equips them to play their part in God’s missionary work in the world today. I have such hope for what God is doing and will continue to do in our nation through the College and I look forward to working with the Dean and the staff team in our vision to train and equip people to share the Gospel, plant and lead churches and be a vibrant witness to Christ in a changing world.

Andy Emerton, Dean of St Mellitus College writes:

Hannah is an excellent theological educator who is passionate about evangelism and mission and equipping others to share the Gospel. As a part of the college staff team for the past 4 years, Hannah has brought great energy, enthusiasm and wisdom and is much loved by both staff and students. As Director she brings a great love for people as well as a proven commitment to the vision and values of the college and a missional, can-do attitude. We are looking forward to her taking on this new role in the life of the college.
